Last week, as part of its Indigenous Perspectives Exhibit, the Library of Virginia asked four leaders from Tribes in Virginia to discuss the consequences to their cultures of the Racial Integrity Act put in place to preserve white supremacy in the state 100 years ago. Pamela D’Angelo reports.

Youngkin honors Virginia’s native tribes in annual Thanksgiving ceremony

Governor Glenn Youngkin welcomed members from two of Virginia’s Native American tribes to the executive mansion Wednesday morning. The event honors the bond between early Virginians and the local tribes who’ve inhabited the region for thousands of years. Brad Kutner has more from Richmond.

Years-long battle over sacred Monacan site ends in preservation

Members of the Monacan Indian Nation declared victory Wednesday in a years-long battle to prevent construction on a sacred spot along the James River.

As Mallory Noe-Payne reports, local officials have agreed to an alternative path for a water pipeline; one that archeologists say won’t impact native burial grounds.

Bill to Recognize Virginia Indian Tribes Passes House

Virginia Indian tribes have been working to gain federal recognition since the 1970’s, so far unsuccessfully. But this week in Congress both the House and Senate took action that is giving supporters of the effort new hope. Michael Pope has the story.
